He is a cultural entrepreneur and industry leader with an unwavering commitment to storytelling, particularly bold, original stories rooted in African experiences. Uche Agbo describes himself as an “avant-garde filmmaker” and began making films at a young age and has since built a career spanning film, television, digital media, and creative enterprise. His work reflects a deep appreciation of the richness of African culture and a determination to project the continent’s stories with dignity, authenticity, and global relevance. As a director and producer of feature and documentary films, he has also worked on commercial productions, mentored emerging filmmakers, and championed higher professional standards within the industry.

Beyond filmmaking, Agbo has distinguished himself as an institutional leader and cultural entrepreneur. He currently serves as President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) and Chairman of the Nigerian Film Festivals Association (NFFA), working to strengthen the industry and expand the reach of Nigerian cinema. He is also the founder and executive director of the Coal City Film Festival, an important platform for filmmaking in southeastern Nigeria. Through Okike Media Limited, Uche Agbo Studios, and his film-training initiatives, he continues to promote creative production and nurture the next generation of African storytellers.

Agbo holds degrees in Theatre and Film Studies from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. He is also an alumnus of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program. His recognition by the Forbes Nigeria Accelerator in 2020 further underscores his entrepreneurial vision. In July 2026, Kolawole Olaiya of Nollywood in Review met with Agbo at his office in Surulere, Lagos, for a conversation about his filmmaking journey, his vision for Nigerian cinema, and the opportunities and challenges facing the industry. In this episode, we also explore the relationship between creative practice and institutional leadership, as well as the future of African storytelling.
