There are actors whose careers illuminate an era, and there are others whose lives become bridges across generations of performance. Joke Muyiwa belongs to this distinguished company. For more than four decades, she has stood at the crossroads of theatre, television, and cinema, carrying with grace and conviction the rich traditions of Nigerian storytelling from stage to screen.

Her journey began at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Ibadan, and continued through some of Nigeria’s most important institutions of theatrical training and performance—the University of Ibadan Performing Arts Theatre and the Obafemi Awolowo University Theatre Company. Along the way, she built a remarkable career that spans classical theatre, popular television, Yoruba-language cinema, and contemporary Nollywood. Audiences across generations know her memorable performances in films and series such as Afonja, The Narrow Path, Ayitale, Swallow, King of Thieves, The Mystic River, and Orisa Aiye. Whether portraying mothers, queens, matriarchs, or custodians of communal values, Joke Muyiwa brings to every role a rare combination of emotional depth, cultural authenticity, and artistic discipline.

Yet her contribution extends beyond performance. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, holder of a master’s degree from the University of Ibadan, and a Ph.D. from Redeemer’s University, Professor Joke Muyiwa represents an enduring union of scholarship and artistic practice. As a lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts at Olabisi Onabanjo University, she has not only shaped memorable characters on screen but has also helped nurture new generations of actors, performers, and scholars.

In many ways, her story mirrors the evolution of Nigerian performance itself—from the era of television drama and travelling theatre traditions to the rise of Yoruba-language films and the global reach of Nollywood today. Her awards and recognitions, including Best Lead Actress honors for Ayitale and the City People Movie Award’s Movie Matriarch Recognition Award, testify to a career marked by excellence, longevity, and influence.

Kolawole Olaiya of Nollywood in Review met with Professor Joke Muyiwa, the humble actress, scholar, teacher, and cultural ambassador, whose life’s work has enriched Nigerian theatre and cinema on a film set in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria in July 2025 for a conversation. Join us as we reflect with Joke Muyiwa on the changing landscapes of performance, the craft of acting, the enduring vitality of Yoruba storytelling, and the remarkable journey of Nollywood across generations.

The way prof meets these icons of the industry I only wonder! The logistics involved the time and energy it consumes is huge, yet prof handles it with grace.
