Dr. Chika Christian Onu is a multifaceted Nigerian creative professional whose career spans several decades in television and film production, academia, and theatre arts. His journey in media began at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where he distinguished himself as a Scriptwriter/Producer/Director, contributing to acclaimed classic programs including “Tales by Moonlight,” “Kidi Vision 101,” “Cock Crow at Dawn” and the soap opera “Mirror in the Sun.” His pivotal role in Nollywood’s history was cemented when Kenneth Nnebue invited him to direct “Living in Bondage 2,” a film that holds legendary status in Nigerian cinema. Following this breakthrough, Dr. Onu went on to direct over one hundred films, including notable classics such as “Glamor Girls” (1994) and “Karishika,” establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s legendary directors. His commitment to education and professional development led him to earn a doctorate degree, after which he transitioned into academia, serving as a university lecturer until his recent retirement. Throughout his career, Dr. Onu has demonstrated versatility as a writer, lecturer, theatre practitioner, actor, and filmmaker, making him one of the most influential figures in the development of Nigerian television and cinema. Kolawole Olaiya of Nollywood in Review met with Dr. Chika Christian Onu at the conference organized in honor of Professor Onookome Okome in Abuja in June 2024, where they had a conversation that would be on interest to Nollywood film history enthusiasts and Nollywood film scholars.
