Skits – what Ignatius Chukwuma (2018) calls “comicast” – is one of the dominant genres in the Nigerian digital space. They come in different shapes and sizes and are characterized by “violation of English grammatical rules,” “mixture of indigenous and English” languages, and “coinage of words” according to Ibukun Filani and Adeoti Oluwatomi (2022). They are mostly satires that lampoon people in different spheres of society. Most Nigerian skits are slapstick comedies that focus mainly on making people laugh. Niji Akanni, a Nigerian film maker and teacher, observes that “unlike the classic form of satire, most satirical skits currently in the Nigerian media space don’t quite get the point that beyond laughter, satires are also used to x-ray or analyze the ills of the society. So, the skits don’t do enough – they lampoon but only very few do enough critical analysis.” Akanni’s comment brilliantly captures the uneven qualities of comicasts in the Nigerian digital space. But the skits of Debo are different. “Debo” Adedayo a.k.a. Mr. Macaroni, is a popular Nigerian actor, writer, film maker. Mostly known for his skits, “Daddy Wa” and “Professor Hard Life,” he is a prominent skit maker who uses humor to expose and ridicule bad behaviors that have been normalized and accepted as “commonsense” in our society. Debo is an uncompromising film maker and crusader for justice and this shows in his skits. He is a graduate of theater arts who knows the power of film. Beyond that, Debo, who ‘reluctantly’ got into skit making, cares about the effect of his skits on society. Although he plays the role of Mr. Macaroni, a corrupt and shamelessly entitled womanizer in his skits, Debo is a decent man who is passionate about his art and is intentional about the function he wants it to perform in society. He is unapologetic in his desire to use his craft to expose those who prey on women and the less privileged. He strongly believes in the merit of collaboration, and perhaps more than any film maker, his skits feature both young and old Nollywood actors. Debo Adedayo spoke with Kolawole Olaiya of Nollywood In Review in his office in Lagos, Nigeria in May 2024. It was a frank discussion on the Nigerian film space. See the discussion below:
